Ajmer

16th November 2004.

Ajmer is another kingdom of the Raj. We took a brief day trip from Pushkar, and that was enough for us, though it was a pretty cool place.

The Jain "Red Temple" was a real surprise. It contained a two story model of the Jain concept of the beginning of the universe.

Complete with flying elephants, it bears a striking resemblance to a golden lego set from the "Never Ending Story."

As usual Claire was approached for a photo by a group of 10 teenage boys. Who then asked Jason, calling him "Unkle" as if that would mean Jason would let them take a photo.

The concept was cool but the museum was crap.

The fort museum had a lot of material and not a lot of people who cared about it.

This piece of cultural history is a beautifully carved sandstone that has now been used as a rock to keep a fire from spreading in the courtyard.

Only in India.

The mosque was cool, and the people were very friendly even taking the time to laugh at Jason for covering his head with a pair of trousers. Concerns that the impromptu turban might be seen as offensive quickly disappeared amongst the laughter of strangers.

The Old Mosque is basically abandoned. Beautifully carved stones are strewn all over the courtyard and curators seem to be a couple of people sweeping the ground with straw brooms whose only words are "Backsheesh" or bribe for entry. After we politely declined they followed us anyway.

"Unkle" can we have pictures with your girl?

Now the photos start. This new bride is posing with Claire for one of her marriage photos.

Then the boy and his father who had been following us for ages finally got up the courage to ask for a photo. They were sweet.

Then the snowball effects starts. This lovely couple were next.

After saying yes to everyone else, how could we say no to these guys.

This ones going straight in the W.B. for these lads.
