World's End (Horton Plains)

2nd March 2005.

The Horton Plains form a undulating plateau above 2000 metres. They contain mainly grasslands, interspersed with forests that make it a beautiful hike up to see the World's End. This is another sunrise hike, and as Claire was still in Kandy, Jason came here with Bobby and Jemilla who he met at Adam's Peak.

We spent the night in Nuwara Eliya which was billed as being the hill station were wealthy Sri Lankans come to escape the heat of summer. It had a few nice old English style houses but was a bit noisy and soulless.

A 5am start to get to the top of the plains for sunrise. The same sea of clouds greeted us as yesterday.

But this guy was new. This Elk is a little domesticated so it was knocking on the door at the guards hut for his breakfast when we drove past.

Despite the horns I got up the courage to give him a biscuit in exchange for a kiss.

We had a cup of tea before the walk and this guy tried to eat my camera.

It took around an hour to reach Worlds End. We were expecting something a little more spectacular from the shear 880m drop of the edge.

The plain itself was scrubby grassland that appeared to have a very light frost before the sun burnt it off.

I couldn't resist jumping off Bakers Falls into the freezing water. It was a pretty refreshing experience.

Afterwards we discovered a request not to bathe here and on the train home Jason met some tourists who warned him of some white worm parasite thing at a waterfall lower down!

No sign of worms yet though.

The river and unusual trees growing on the plains.

Very cool lizard. This guy was defrosting in the morning sun on the top of a bush.

It was lunchtime by the time we left and our Elk must have heard the van coming. He was waiting at his checkpoint to ensure that we had no snacks left before leaving the park. How could we resist!

The train ride back to Kandy was through tea plantation and I finally got my tea-plantation-worker photo.

This cargo carriage is on the tracks. Unnerving several of these were located at the bottom of banks or against trees or upside down beneath the tracks.

Wicked train ride back to Kandy to see the sick missus.
