Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. Boiling hot, busy city. We stayed here twice to break up our journeys across the country and to indulge in a little retail therapy at considerably cheaper prices than back in London.
The main road in Colombo next to the railway station. It used to be home to some good markets, but all we found was busy road hassle, and no good bargains.
Catching a train to Hikkaduwa we quickly realised that the Tsunami had caused considerable damage on this coast. Before we had left Colombo the scenery of rubble bought home the effects of the disaster.
Our journeys in and out of Colombo showed us the destructive power of the waves. This house has been walloped by the wave taking down the half the house, and all its contents.
These homes were totally destroyed. People now live in the donated tents pitched on the foundations of their old houses.
This is the train that was full of people on the morning of the Tsunami. The train was ripped off its tracks, taking the people with it. The railway tracks have been pulled up for several hundred metres.
