Mumbai/Bombay

30th December 2004 - 1st January 2005.

Mumbai, or Bombay to the Brits. This place has really changed in the ten years since Claire was here. It was a welcome retreat from the backward villages that we had previously visited. Here you could get a decent coffee, western comforts and cleanish streets.... relatively!

The beautiful Victorian Train Station. We arrived here early in the morning after a night train of snoring insomniacs who would yell at each other for a bit before snoring at 100db. Then they would repeat said loop of snoring and yelling every few hours.

We walked around the city. Cricket and sleeping in the park are rapidly replacing religion.

The Taj gate, stands proud in Colaba.

Hawkers line the tourist areas, selling rather large phallic balloons. They appear permanently perplexed at the refusal of Westerners to purchase such obviously essential items.

The Taj Hotel where we partook in a few beverages, and marvelled at the immaculate corridors and toilets. (She even wipes the seats for you before you sit down - very posh).

Us, in the "comfort & safety" of our hotel room, before we went out to sample Bombay nightlife and to see in the New Year.

It seems ladders, and daisy the cow are not welcome between peak hours in the city. Only in India...
