Halebid

29th January 2005.

Halebid was an afternoon visit to check out the Hoysaleswara Temple.  It was a lovely little town with many friendly people; it had a relaxing feel in stark contrast to alot of the temple towns of Hinduism. We had a great afternoon feeling like celebrities 'cause everyone was smiling, staring, waving at us, and wanted us in their photos, or themselves in ours.

Locals sew the coir that Jason is obsessed with.

The carts in town are poshly decorated with bright colours and religious scenes.

This is the usual crowd of observers who stare as we do anything in town. For some reason everything we seem to do fascinates people, so it's often hard to get a moment on your own.

These lovely ladies protect themselves from the sun. Jason thinks he saw one of them give him dirty eye, so he winked back to their amusement.

We finally got to the Hoysaleswara temple. This temple was started in 1121, and took more than 80 years to build and still remains incomplete. This photo shows the base of the temple where the elephant shows 'strength', the lion 'courage', and the horses 'speed'.

Boys like Jason in their photos; apparently one in six men in India are thought to be gay, and it is not cool to be "out" here!

Back to the temple and Jason's favourite god, the half lion and half man, Narashima. He is seen here doing what he does best. Ripping the guts out of demons.

These girls followed us around for an hour and ran off giggling after this photo.

The temple gave some indications as to the customs of the times. The dancers spent a lot of time making themselves up in the mirror.

This group of children were here on a school trip from the outback.  They were terrified of Claire ( the blonde hair) and wouldn't touch her. A local told them off in Hindi for not shaking her hand, and when one took the bullet they all did resulting a snowballing frenzy of hand shaking and giggling.

The four to six year old children were also surprised to see a foreigner on their school trip.  It's very cool to see the children getting out and about on two day trips, and seeing their history.

As usual if you looked hard enough you could find the smut. Our guide rather sheepishly points out how the man seems to be having trouble with his tackle so the woman is assisting.

Our lovely guide took us around and he was excellent.

Jason managed to make him stuck for words on many occasions, and asked him what they were doing in some of the sculpture positions, he would reply "yoga sex sir" or "I am not sure sir."

This boy hung out with us for most of the afternoon. He followed us, at first practising his English and we were sure he would ask for something soon. He was ace and walked us to the bus station and ran off waving and smiling self-assured in the knowledge that Jason had told him he was smart enough to be India's Prime Minister one day.
