Uttarkashi
|
13, 16, 19th October 2004.
Uttarkashi is like a very large, busy, bus stop. Trucks and vehicles blast on their horns at every opportunity from 4am, throwing up dust and dirt as you walk around. It is a shame because the nearby villages are beautiful. We hopped in and out of Uttarkashi for connections to trek to Agora, Dodi-Tal,Darwa Top, and Kucheru and before and after our failed attempt at an Ashram living in Netela.

The overview of town, minus the noise.

Its not a particularly clean place with Government signs teaching good living, with dumped litter by its side.

The sacred cow gets to go anywhere it wants, even on this bridge. Because the state of Uttaranchal is particularly religious, it means no meat, no eggs and no booze. It's been a long month for these two hedonists.

The real workers, the women in the fields, are never far away.

The little diagram was at the museum at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. It made Jason laugh, by highlighting Britain's highest mountain, Mt Snowdon at 1,343m, compared to the 13 or so 8,000m plus peaks of the Himalayas.
The museum also contained a photo essay of the Indian expedition that conquered Everest in 2001.

Not a good spider to run into the web of, on way back from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. The excitement of a course to climb 6,000m plus peaks was too much for Jason to concentrate on whilst bush crashing down the hill.
