Chirbasa

9th October 2004.

We left Gangotri on a beautiful sunny morning, making our way to Chirbasa that is 9kms away, at an elevation of 3600 metres.

On leaving Gangotri, a guy who had been on our bus the day before, decided to get changed and pose as Claire walked past. Here is a close up of the back, a shiny thong, at the front, Claire got a very padded, red shiny tight crotch.

The guy is a Saddhu or wandering holy man who has a penchant for flashing.

We were amazed by the hot sunshine and the spectacular views as we sauntered up the valley.

The 6,000m plus mountains beckoned us towards them.

Rustling in the leaves brought this cheeky lizard out to warm up in the sun.

Claire has by now recovered over the shock of "thong man", and is starting to enjoy the walk.....

...and the river crossings which are not her favourite.

Lots and lots of people want to stop and chat to Claire (most are men), most of them are weird, but they are at least friendly. These pilgrims are searching for a chance to dip in the Ganges at the end of the trek.

This Bharal (deer like thing) jumped out on us on the trek and in panic at the sight of Jason's rather bad afro, leaped up a 12ft cliff face to get away.

Jason put his hat on from then on, in order to stop scaring the locals.  There are many horses on this trek, and they all need a good meal and some water.  We didn't like seeing how skinny the horses were taking up fat pilgrims for 18kms at a time.

We had to of course stop to frequent the local Dhabas that serve rather hot Chai tea in cups that you hope the person who used them last doesn't have some disease.

This is a rather friendly man who served us Chai before leading us down to a gorgeous campsite at Chirbasa, where it was a tad cold but bearable.  We went to bed feeling excited that the next day could be as clear and beautiful and today.

On waking up Jason (adventure boy) leaps up to make tea and porridge so that we can get going up the trail. Claire notices some white leaves falling off the tree. An hour later we realise its snow.  The weather is not being kind to us again and the mountains have all disappeared into the haze.
